Bev Shean is one of Australia's most versatile artists
and has performed for many years throughout the country with a vast range of
roles in her repertoire. A native of Sydney, Miss Shean has resided and worked
from Brisbane for a number of years and she has been a principal artist in
musical theatre, opera, theatre, music hall, the concert platform and
television. She has been a principal with the
Queensland Theatre Company, Lyric Opera of Queensland, Brisbane Light Opera
Company, Victoria State Opera, State Opera of South Australia, Opera A.C.T.,
and as a guest artist with the Hong Kong Arts
Festival. Highlights of her career have
included performances in two Australian premieres. One was her highly acclaimed
and compelling portrayal of Nellie Lovett in Stephen Sondheim's
Sweeney Todd
for Opera A.C.T., Canberra. The other was as the Fortune Teller in
The Fiery Angel
for the State Opera of South Australia.
Among Bev's many successful roles are Connie in
Dinkum
Assorted, Miss Hannigan in
Annie, the
Fairy Queen in
Iolanthe,
Berta in The Barber of
Seville, Marcellina in
The Marriage of
Figaro, Frauline Schneider in
Cabaret, the
Duchess in The
Gondoliers, and Filipyevna in
Eugene Onegin,
for which she was nominated for a Green Room
Award. For the Queensland Performing Arts Trust
she has appeared as Gladys Moncrieff in My Life
Is Love and more recently played the role of
the Old Lady in the concert version of Bernstein's
Candide for
the 1995 Brisbane Biennial.
Bev has appeared as Katisha in the
Essgee Australian and New Zealand productions of The Mikado and as Ruth in
Essgee's New Zealand production of The
Pirates. Most recently she has again played
the role of Miss Hannigan in Annie for season in Perth as well as playing in
ShowBoat in Sydney. Bev now lives happily and is semi-retired in Victor
Harbour South Australia.
